Die Bevölkerung des Landkreises ist uralt: Es scheint, dass das Gebiet in monterubbianese Altsteinzeit Neandertaler besiedelt (32.000 Jahre vor Christi Geburt); Auch zeigte die Existenz von aufeinander folgenden Siedlungen aus der Jungstein aus, vorrömischen und römischen Zeiten, und häufigen Kontakt mit der Etrusker. Durch die Goten im fünften Jahrhundert nach Christus zerstört, wurde von den Benediktinermönchen der Abtei von Farfa umgebaut, in den offiziellen Dokumenten des elften Jahrhunderts unter dem Namen Urbiano erscheinen. Kaufte die Gemeindeautonomie im folgenden Jahrhundert litt Plünderung und Zerstörung von Friedrich I. Barbarossa (1176) und dem Herzogtum Fermo, die schließlich zu unterwerfen hatte (1258). Blutige Episoden wurden bis zum Eingreifen des Francesco Sforza, der, nachdem er zwischen 1436 und 1443 besetzt, befestigte er die Wandstruktur wiederholt. Später wurde ein Teil des Kirchenstaates. Der Name ist eine Verbindung der Begriff “stromaufwärts” und einer Brutto Bildung einer latein persönlichen RUB (B) IUS, mit der Hinzufügung des Adjektivs Suffix-Anus. Der Bezirk umfasst eine reiche künstlerische und architektonische Erbe: romanischen Stil sind das Pfarrhaus Sankt Stephan und Sankt Vincent und die Kirchen Santa Maria Olmo, St. Lucia und der Madonna del Soccorso. Bauen wieder die Kirche San Francesco (1247), mit einer barocken Glockenturm ausgestattet, die Abtei von St. Flavian und Biagio, der Kirche San Michele Arcangelo dem vierzehnten Jahrhundert, die romanisch-gotische St. Johannes der Täufer und Evangelist (mit Fresken vierzehnten Jahrhundert und fünfzehnten) und der Stiftskirche von Santa Maria des Literaten, mit Werken von Vincenzo Pagani Lattanzio und geschmückt. Tiefbau bleiben die Mauern mit dem Alten Hafen, dem Renaissance-Palast Calzecchi Onesti und Theater Pagani, im Jahre 1875 vom Architekten Luca Galli gebaut.

The population of the district is ancient: it seems that the area was inhabited in monterubbianese Paleolithic Neanderthal man (32,000 years before the birth of Christ); was also demonstrated the existence of successive settlements, dating back to Neolithic, pre-Roman and Roman times, and frequent contact with the Etruscans. Destroyed by the Goths in the fifth century AD, was rebuilt by the Benedictine monks of the abbey of Farfa, appearing in official documents of the eleventh century by the name of Urbiano. Purchased the municipal autonomy in the following century, suffered looting and destruction by Frederick I Barbarossa (1176) and the Duchy of Fermo, which had to finally subdue (1258). Bloody episodes were repeated until the intervention of Francesco Sforza, who, after having occupied between 1436 and 1443, he fortified the wall structure. Later it became part of the Papal States. The name is a compound of the term “upstream” and a gross formation of a Latin personal RUB (B) IUS, with the addition of the adjectival suffix-anus. The district encompasses a rich artistic and architectural heritage: Romanesque style are the rectory of Saints Stephen and Vincent and the churches of Santa Maria Olmo, of Saint Lucia and the Madonna del Soccorso. Are building back the church of San Francesco (1247), equipped with a Baroque bell tower, the abbey of St. Flavian and Biagio, the fourteenth-century church of San Michele Arcangelo, the Romanesque-Gothic St. John the Baptist and Evangelist (with fourteenth century frescoes and fifteenth) and the collegiate church of Santa Maria of the Literati, adorned with works by Vincenzo Lattanzio and Pagani. Civil construction remain to the defensive walls with the Old Port, the Renaissance palace Calzecchi Onesti and theater Pagani, built in 1875 by architect Luca Galli.

Il popolamento del territorio comunale è antichissimo: sembra infatti che il comprensorio monterubbianese sia stato abitato in età paleolitica dall’uomo di Neanderthal (32.000 anni prima della nascita di Cristo); è stata inoltre dimostrata l’esistenza di successivi insediamenti, risalenti alle epoche neolitica, preromana e romana, e di frequenti contatti con il popolo etrusco.

Distrutta dai goti nel V secolo d.C., fu riedificata dai monaci benedettini dell’abbazia di Farfa, comparendo nei documenti ufficiali dell’XI secolo con il nome di Urbiano. Acquistata l’autonomia comunale nel secolo seguente, subì saccheggi e distruzioni da parte di Federico I Barbarossa (1176) e del ducato di Fermo, al quale si dovette infine sottomettere (1258). Episodi sanguinosi si ripeterono fino all’intervento di Francesco Sforza che, dopo averla occupata tra il 1436 e il 1443, ne fortificò la struttura muraria. Successivamente entrò a far parte dello Stato Pontificio.

Il toponimo è un composto del termine “monte” e di una formazione prediale da un personale latino RUB(B)IUS, con l’aggiunta del suffisso aggettivale −ANUS. Il territorio comunale racchiude un ricchissimo patrimonio artistico e architettonico: di stile romanico sono la pievania dei Santi Stefano e Vincenzo e le chiese di Santa Maria dell’Olmo, di Santa Lucia e della Madonna del Soccorso.

Sono invece di costruzione posteriore la chiesa di San Francesco (1247), munita di campanile barocco, l’abbazia dei Santi Flaviano e Biagio, la trecentesca chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, quella romanico-gotica di San Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista (con affreschi trecenteschi e quattrocenteschi) e la collegiata di Santa Maria dei Letterati, ornata da opere di Vincenzo e Lattanzio Pagani.

Dell’edilizia civile restano invece le mura difensive con la Porta Vecchia, il rinascimentale palazzo Calzecchi Onesti e il teatro Pagani, costruito nel 1875 su progetto dell’architetto Luca Galli.
