The Monti Sibillini National Park is a protected area of the massif of the Sibillini Mountains and extends between the regions of Marche and Umbria, falling in four provinces: Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Perugia. It is managed by the National Park of Monti Sibillini, based in Visso. It covers an area of about 71 437 hectares, on a mainly mountainous. The predominant landscape is that of the limestone massif of the Apennines, which in this area serves as an interface between the softer forms part of the Tuscan-Emilian and maximum heights of Abruzzo, assuming traits severe and steep. From the main axis of the Apennines degrade an eastern and western one. The first is characterized by a wide variety of landscapes and natural environments. The valley bottoms of rivers and streams are divided into narrow gorges and impressive (as the striking Gole dell’Infernaccio), created by the telluric activity and erosion. Higher up many woods (mainly beech) gird crown of the Apennine valleys with prevailing north-south trend. The western side slopes gently toward the Umbria with a successive series of depressions at high altitude, the famous Castelluccio Plains.
